Our trip to India was generally marvellous. The Claridges Hotel was spot-on. All the booking and Itinerary were well done. The Lodi Temple got missed off in Delhi but the guide luckily was willing to take us anyway. I had specifically asked for this. The reason for 4 stars not 5 is that we had terribly violent gastroenteritis in Agra. We both got this at the same time and were convinced it was caused by our lunch at DoubleTree by Hilton. This was a characterless, impersonal hotel in a rather grotty part of Agra. We think the hotel had only been running for two years and just didn't seem very good at all. We seriously wonder about the levels of hygiene. We do realise that stomach upsets are usual in India but it occurred a few hours after we had both eaten a curry for lunch which we expected to be hot and was cold and possibly not suitable for Western tourists as we had heard that it was best for us always to eat cooked food. We did not know when we ordered it that it would be cold. Whilst we were ill I spoke with Rupert from A&K in Britain and he was fantastic...couldn't have been better. He seemed to understand completely, had been backpacking in India himself, knew just how to be with us - first-rate. He listened, was understanding, reassuring, gave sensible advice and dealt with making adjustments to our trip so we could see everything we missed on our day of illness. We couldn't rate him more highly. Once we got going again our hotels in Jaipur and then Amanbagh were superb. Overall A&K's service was very good and if it hadn't been for Hilton Agra our Trip was 5 star. The whole thing does of course depend so much on the manner of the people with whom we have dealings. All of the A&K people in India were great and always seemed to want to do all they could to be helpful. They came across as warm and genuinely seemed to want us to have a first-rate trip. The A&K people in India and Rupert were just brilliant when we did get ill but we do wonder if with greater levels of hygiene/a different hotel our illness could have been avoided. All the hotels were the ones put together for us by A&K and Hilton did not match up to the rest. A smaller irritation with Hilton was that Internet access had to be paid for....really this seemed terribly petty. We did not eat out at all on our trip other than at lunch-stops where our driver recommended and these seemed fine with cooked food. Our Itinerary including areas, forts, palaces, temples, step-well, bird-sanctuary was marvellous and beyond expectation. We have used A&K before and will most probably use them again but we will be extra careful that everything we want included is on the itinerary and that wherever we stay is of a good enough standard. It would certainly have been worth paying more not to become so ill. Just maybe we can help prevent this happening for other travellers by having raised the issue. Our driver throughout our trip, Satish Kapoor, was excellent. He had to drive in such a varied range of complexities and did it so very well. He was quiet when we had guides but became like our guide when we did not have one. He even rang us when he heard we were ill and seemed genuinely concerned. He was a great character and couldn't have been better. All of the guides were good particularly the Delhi and Agra ones and the one at Bharatpur. Overall, a wonderful experience and we have some great memories.
